[Telephone interview with Dmitriy Rurikov, assistant to
Russian President B.N. Yeltsin, by correspondent Sue Cameron;
Rurikov in Moscow and Cameron in the London studio; from the
"Newsnight" program--recorded]

[Text] [Cameron] What is your assessment of the situation in
Moscow?

[Rurikov] Well, the position this evening is rather tense
yet. The main object, the White House, is more or less quiet,
but there might be problems arising in the city because the
people who came to defend Mr. Rutskoy, and they are scattered
around the city--they might create troubles and acts of
terrorism here and there. They are not Muscovites, they do not
care about Moscow.

[Cameron] So will Rutskoy and Khasbulatov stand trial?

[Rurikov] It is, I think, in future. At this stage they
will be asked questions, inquiries might be made in order to
determine their legal position.

[Cameron] Will President Yeltsin try to accomodate the
ordinary people who supported the hard-liners by slowing down
some of his reforms.

[Rurikov] There will be measures to increase the base of
reform, and of course there will be measures to increase the
pace and the scale of political dialogue, and to ensure
democracy, in which everyone will have his say.

[Cameron] Do you expect President Yeltsin to stand in the
presidential elections that are due to be held next year?

[Rurikov] Well, President Yeltsin just recently made his
statement that he has not made up his mind on his candidacy. He
has to consider many factors, and we respect his attitude,
although personally I would like to see President Yeltsin be a
candidate for presidency.

[Cameron] Do you think the events of the last 24-hours will
influence his decision?

[Rurikov] I hope that they will convince him to stand for
president.
