  14. <p>   [Text] [Cameron] What is your assessment of the situation in
  15. Moscow?
  16. </p>
  17. <p>   [Rurikov] Well, the position this evening is rather tense
  18. yet. The main object, the White House, is more or less quiet,
  19. but there might be problems arising in the city because the
  20. people who came to defend Mr. Rutskoy, and they are scattered
  21. around the city--they might create troubles and acts of
  22. terrorism here and there. They are not Muscovites, they do not
  23. care about Moscow.

  25. <p>   [Cameron] So will Rutskoy and Khasbulatov stand trial?
  26. </p>
  27. <p>   [Rurikov] It is, I think, in future. At this stage they
  28. will be asked questions, inquiries might be made in order to
  29. determine their legal position.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>   [Cameron] Will President Yeltsin try to accomodate the
  32. ordinary people who supported the hard-liners by slowing down
  33. some of his reforms.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>   [Rurikov] There will be measures to increase the base of
  36. reform, and of course there will be measures to increase the
  37. pace and the scale of political dialogue, and to ensure
  38. democracy, in which everyone will have his say.
  39. </p>
  40. <p>   [Cameron] Do you expect President Yeltsin to stand in the
  41. presidential elections that are due to be held next year?
  42. </p>
  43. <p>   [Rurikov] Well, President Yeltsin just recently made his
  44. statement that he has not made up his mind on his candidacy. He
  45. has to consider many factors, and we respect his attitude,
  46. although personally I would like to see President Yeltsin be a
  47. candidate for presidency.
  48. </p>
  49. <p>   [Cameron] Do you think the events of the last 24-hours will
  50. influence his decision?
  51. </p>
  52. <p>   [Rurikov] I hope that they will convince him to stand for
  53. president.
